Teak is one of the most durable, low-maintenance materials in the world. With the right care, your furniture will deepen in character with every passing year.
Unlike most hardwoods, teak contains a naturally high oil content that makes it uniquely resistant to moisture, warping and insects. This is why teak has been used for centuries in everything from fine furniture to ship decks. It does not need the same level of intervention as other woods, but a little care goes a long way.
For everyday maintenance, simply wipe your teak wood furniture with a soft dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid wet cloths or harsh chemical cleaners as they are unnecessary and can strip the wood's natural oils over time. Keep furniture away from prolonged direct sunlight where possible, as UV exposure can cause slight fading over the years.
Once or twice a year, apply a thin coat of teak oil using a soft cloth, working with the grain of the wood. This replenishes the wood's natural oils, maintains its rich lustre and provides an additional layer of protection. Wipe away any excess oil after application and allow to dry fully before use.
Teak wood handles spills well, but wipe them up promptly with a dry cloth. For stubborn stains, a very mild soap solution applied gently with a soft cloth will do the job. Always dry the surface thoroughly afterwards. Avoid abrasive cloths or scouring pads as they will scratch the surface.
Over time, untreated teak wood will naturally develop a silver-grey patina, a sign of age that many consider beautiful. If you prefer to maintain the original warm honey-brown tone, regular teak oil application will preserve it. Either way, the structural integrity of the wood remains completely unaffected.
