Caring for Your Wooden Furniture: Essential Tips

Quality wooden furniture is built to last, but it does need proper care to maintain its beauty and structural integrity over the years. Whether you own antique heirloom pieces or newly crafted furniture, these essential tips will help you keep your wood looking its best.
Daily Care
Dusting Dust your wooden furniture regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Dust particles can act as fine abrasives that scratch the finish over time. Always dust in the direction of the wood grain.
Coasters and Mats Always use coasters under glasses and mats under hot dishes. Water rings and heat marks are among the most common, and most preventable, forms of damage to wood finishes.
Cleaning
Gentle Cleaning Solution For deeper cleaning, mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water. Dampen (not soak) a soft cloth, wipe the surface, and immediately dry with a clean cloth. Never let water sit on wood surfaces.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals Stay away from silicone-based sprays, ammonia-based cleaners, and abrasive products. These can strip the finish, dull the wood, or leave a sticky residue that attracts more dust.
Protection
Sunlight Direct sunlight can fade and dry out wood. Position furniture away from windows or use curtains and UV-filtering film to protect your pieces.
Humidity Control Wood expands and contracts with humidity changes. In India's varied climate, this is especially important: - During monsoon season, use a dehumidifier or ensure good ventilation - In dry winters, a humidifier prevents wood from cracking - Maintain indoor humidity between 40–60% for optimal wood health
Polish and Wax Apply a quality beeswax or carnauba wax polish every 3–6 months. This nourishes the wood and provides a protective barrier. Avoid over-polishing, which can cause buildup.
Handling Damage
Minor Scratches Rub a walnut kernel along the scratch; the natural oils help conceal minor marks. For deeper scratches, use a matching wood filler or touch-up marker.
Water Stains Place a clean cloth over the stain and lightly press with a warm (not hot) iron. The heat draws the moisture out. Alternatively, a paste of baking soda and water applied gently can help.
Long-Term Care
Have your fine wooden furniture professionally inspected and refinished every 5–10 years. This is especially important for antique or heirloom pieces.
